Dennis Dowdell, Jr. has a distinguished career as an attorney, senior corporate executive, and nationally recognized President/Executive Director of non-profit organizations.

Mr. Dowdell is currently Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.  He is a member of Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s senior leadership team with a multi-dimensional role.  He is responsible for aligning Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s human resources strategies with its organizational strategy, and ensuring that all functional initiatives are consistent and properly coordinated.


Prior to joining MSKCC, Mr. Dowdell was Executive Director of The Executive Leadership Council’s Institute for Leadership Development & Research.  The Executive Leadership Council is the national association representing senior African-American corporate officers in Fortune 500 companies.

Mr. Dowdell has also been the President of LANYAP SQUARED, LLC, a consulting firm that provides companies with strategic, operational and administrative leadership and diversity consulting.  In addition, while with LANYAP SQUARED, Mr. Dowdell was the President of the National Association of Black Automotive Suppliers (NABAS), headquartered in Troy, Michigan, with an office in Montgomery, Alabama. Prior to that, he held senior executive leadership positions in human resources with The American Can Company in Greenwich, CT. and The Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, MI. During his career with the U.S. Department of Labor, he was a senior attorney focused on legislative and legal issues related to employee benefits, Longshoremen and harbor workers issues, equal pay, age discrimination, OSHA, minimum wage/overtime, labor management relations, and other labor statutes.

A graduate of Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, he earned a B.S. in education with a concentration in history and political science, cum laude, and received a Doctorate, honoris causa, from his alma mater.  He also earned a J.D. from Cleveland State University College of Law.  He has practiced law in several states, and before several U.S. Courts of Appeals.  One of his cases went before the U.S. Supreme Court, and was affirmed.  He has been the recipient of numerous awards and commendations, and has served on national non-profit boards of directors (Vice-Chair, National Alzheimer’s Association; President Emeritus, 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit; Chair, BEEP Program, National Urban League – recipient of BEEP’s Lifetime Achievement Award), and a recipient of the National Urban League’s most prestigious recognition, The Whitney M. Young Award, for a career of distinguished service to the National Urban League. Mr. Dowdell and his wife Equinetta have three daughters and currently reside in Stamford, Connecticut.
